TEA, SD (KELO) – One of South Dakota’s fastest growing churches is raising money to honor those who have served.
The Tea Veterans Memorial is a project that has been in the making for years.
“It’s just a matter of finding the people and the resources to organize it because this is the year we’re going to make it,” said Janelle Boots, treasurer of the Tea Veterans Memorial Committee.
The goal is to raise $150,000. The committee behind the monument started with six people. They now have more than 25 members and have raised $80,000.
“They really believe in it, and that’s why we’re getting more volunteers and more projects that have come up, little events that are planned as fundraisers,” Boots said.
“I’ll be your designated bingo caller,” said Justin Henderson, a Tea resident and sprint car driver.
This Sunday’s fundraiser at Squealer’s Smoke Shack in Tea will showcase Sprint Car Champion Justin Henderson’s bingo calling skills. The Tea resident’s father and grandfather are both veterans.
“There are many reasons for me to get involved, it is also part of your civic duty. If there is anything I can do for our veterans in this area, I appreciate everything they have done to allow us to be here today and speak freely,” Henderson said.
With fundraising more than 50% complete, the committee hopes to break ground by Memorial Day and dedicate the memorial by Veterans Day.
“Main and third are right there in our new sports complex, so that’s going to look phenomenal from the front,” Henderson said.
“We ordered the materials. We had to jack off enough to get the order, so we’ve got it here so we can get that done by Veterans Day when we want to be in-the-know,” Boots said.
That means there’s still time to get involved.
Sunday’s fundraiser begins at 2pm at Squealer’s Smoke Shack in Tea.
