Suzann Bonzo Obituary (1952-2021) – Sciotoville, OH


SCIOTOVILLE-Dr. Suzann M. Bonzo, 69, from Sciotoville, went home to be with her master on December 18, 2021. She was born in Scioto County on November 2, 1952, and was the youngest daughter of the late Gilbert and Agnes Sergent Bonzo.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, an infant Roger, Ronald Bonzo and Richard Bonzo and a sister Dorothy Beadle.

Her sister-in-law Bridget Bonzo of Sciotoville and six nieces Sandra Bonzo, Sciotoville, Debora (Geof) Phillips of Wilmington, Terry (Jeff) Heffelfinger, Perrysburg, Maria Spriggs, Wilmington, Barbara Bonzo, Reynoldsburg and Rebecca (Mike) White, New Hill survived , NC and four nephews, Matthew (Dorothe) Bonzo, Sand Lake, MI, and Philip (Jennifer) Bonzo, Gallipolis, James (Shawn) Beadle, Canal Winchester, and Kenneth (Allison) Beadle, Lithopolis. She has eleven great nieces and five great nephews; four great-great-grandchildren, five great-great-great-nephews and one great-great-great-grandeur will be arriving in June 2022.

Suzann graduated from East High School in 1971 and from Ohio University, Athens in 1975. She graduated from the Medical College of Toledo with a degree in Medicine in 1978 and completed her residency in Pensacola, FL in 1981.

In 1981 she returned to Portsmouth to begin her internal medicine practice. During her 40 years with the community, she saw the local hospitals, Scioto Memorial, Mercy, and Southern Hills expand and eventually merge into Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC). She was a pioneer in change and growth at SOMC. Her legacy and commitment to her medical specialty will be evident for years to come.

Dr. Bonzo was instrumental in setting up the SOMC’s outpatient hospice program in 1984. She has been a strong advocate of the inpatient hospice center since its inception in 2007. thereby drastically expanding the facility for the care of hospice patients. In fulfilling their calling to medicine, palliative care and hospice, the lives of countless patients and their families have been touched during their years of service. Her commitment to hospice and palliative care was honored by naming the inpatient hospice center SOMC after her.

Dr. In addition to pioneering the expansion of hospice and palliative care programs at SOMC, Bonzo has served an impressive number of roles in the community hospital. She chaired the ethics committee for nearly 20 years and chaired several other committees including intensive care unit (ICU), intensive care medicine, oncology, and pharmacy and therapeutics. She was Chief of Medicine at SOMC in 1985 and 2004. She has been a teacher and mentor to many medical students, interns, and nurses.

Dr. Bonzo received the Scioto County Medical Society’s Outstanding Physician Award in 2017 and retired from the practice in late 2020.

Dr. Bonzo was an avid flower gardener, bird watcher, and baker. She found great joy in outdoor activities and traveling. She spent her most beautiful and unforgettable moments with her family and friends, especially in the summer in the pool.

Dr. Bonzo’s family, their carers and close friends, who have generously cared for them in innumerable ways. Her kindness, grace, and mercy were limitless gifts.

The family of Dr. Bonzo would like to Dr. Bhuvaneswari Ramaswany and her colleagues at Ohio State University’s Stephanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center for the exceptional care they have given Dr. Bonzo have done for the past five years.

Dr. Bonzo’s celebration of life ministry will take place on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Berean Baptist Church in Sciotoville. The funeral will take place in the Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. The tour takes place from 11 a.m. for two hours in the church.

Masks are compulsory for both visits and services.
