SONIA VALENZUELA BOYD HURTADO

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Sonia Valenzuela Boyd-Hurtado, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, returned to her Heavenly Father on January 23, 2022. Sonia was born on January 4, 1952 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras to Norma Elvir and Alvaro Claris Lara.

Young Sonia had irresistible dreams of one day coming to the United States. After the death of her father, she finally fulfilled her childhood dream at the age of 13 and emigrated to the United States with her mother and siblings. They first arrived in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Sonia and her siblings were the only Hispanic children in town, where they became instant celebrities. At the age of 16, Sonia dropped out of high school and married her high school sweetheart, James Randal (Randy) Tucker. While married to Randy, Sonia was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had their first two children, Jamie (James R. Jr.) and Analisa.

Sonia’s life path next took her to Provo, Utah, where she enrolled in courses at Utah Technical College. As a young single mother attending college, she caught the attention of a handsome young man named Ron Boyd. They were married and later sealed in the Provo Temple. Sonia and Ron were married 13 years and had three children, Jason, Jared and Kimberly.

Sonia has achieved many things in her life. While living with Ron and their children in Orem, Utah, she became actively involved in commercial brokerage. She became an excellent trade broker and eventually became known as the “Queen of Trade” and recognized as the leading trade broker in the region. Instead of paying with cash or a credit card, Sonia was able to exchange many things, including her home, furniture, food, travel, entertainment and even the birth of her youngest child.

Sonia’s passion for learning led her back to school at the University of Utah while raising her three (3) youngest children. She graduated with two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Utah and multiple postgraduate certifications.

Shortly after graduating from college, Sonia met and married her late husband, Victor Hurtado, where they spent 20 wonderful years as partners. Some of her happiest days have been getting her two families together for the holidays and other special events.

In the last years of Sonia’s life, she fell in love with a kind and caring gentleman named Ben Torres. Sonia called him her “angel” and realized that God knew she needed someone like Ben to love and be loved by.

Sonia was a very lively spirit and had a beautiful soul. She was devoted to her loving family, whom she considered her “greatest treasure.” She enjoyed gardening, entertaining family and friends, extensive travel, and most importantly, shopping and haggling for great deals. She was a truly genuine woman who was uncompromisingly authentic. She has impacted the lives of so many people for good and her light will be truly missed by all of her friends and family.

In addition to her parents, Sonia was predeceased by her husband Victor Hurtado and stepfather Rene Elvir. She is survived by her brother George R. Valenzuela and sister Edna Lidia Valenzuela; her children Jamie Tucker, Analisa Tucker, Jason Boyd, Jared Boyd (Jennifer) and Kimberly Boyd; grandchildren Ryan Boyd and Emilia Boyd and fiance Ben Torres.
