Although Air Jordan, New Balance and Under Armor have made headlines over the past seven days, sneaker talk has largely been dominated by the future of adidas Yeezy.
Ye – formerly known as “Kanye West” – has taken to social media in recent months to vent his grievances with the 3 Stripes, which he alleges breached their contract and deliberately sabotaged his brand. The 45-year-old was at his most boisterous on Memorial Day weekend, but he’s upped his Instagram and Twitter antics by giving interviews to both Bloomgberg and CNBC in recent days, something he hasn’t done much of since his underperforming presidential campaign in 2020. Ye doubled down on his dissatisfaction with adidas and Gap on both platforms, announcing he was terminating his deal with the latter just days after comparing both brands to his “new baby mamas”. The Chicago native has never been shy about speaking his mind, but his recent public outcry has been in a league of his own, mostly because the Yeezy brand’s future is up in the air. Although the former “Mr. West” has the cultural clout to make his label independent, he currently doesn’t have the infrastructure or team to ensure Yeezys are produced at a level that brands like adidas enable. Only time will tell what becomes of the industry-changing partnership, but we bet Ye will stay with the German sportswear giant until at least 2026.
