Schools in Lordstown are adding a disc golf course, are planning a new playground | News, sports, jobs

LORDSTOWN – Village school officials have created a disc golf course on the school premises and are planning a new playground at the primary school.

Superintendent Greg Bonamase said Seth Mansell, a high school sports and health teacher, suggested that the disc golf course be used by students for physical education classes and also made available to the public.

Bonamase said he and other district employees visited the disc golf course at Trumbull County MetroParks in Champion near Kent State University on the Trumbull Campus and Trumbull Career and Technical Center for ideas.

The $ 5,000 disc golf course has nine holes in front of the school and nine holes behind the high school.

“The students have already been able to use the course and have enjoyed it. We are happy to be able to put this on our property. “ said Bonamase.

The board approved American Athletix to replace the current elementary school playground with the new play equipment and equipment at a cost of $ 215,000.

According to Bonamase, the work will be carried out in the spring with the aging equipment removed and the new units installed and a safe surface installed.

“We hope to be ready by summer” he said.

Bonamase said the interface needed to be improved to make it safer for the children.

The board also approved field trips at its most recent meeting, all of which were canceled last year due to the pandemic. Fifth and sixth graders will attend Camp Fitch for outdoor activities in November. The board also approved the senior class trip to New York City on Memorial Day weekend, May 28-31.

Bonamase said a trip for eighth graders to Washington, DC will be approved at a future board meeting.
