Samuel was born on August 20, 1940 in Lewisport, KY, to Paul Brey “Pete” and Dorothy (Speaks) Thrasher. He married Julie Carr on August 7, 1965 at the Saint Dominic Savio Catholic Church in Bellflower, CA.
Samuel attended St. Alphonsus High School in St. Joseph, KY and Antelope Junior College outside of Los Angeles, CA. He was a Navy veteran serving as E5-AT2 Electronics Tech, USS Coral Sea aircraft carrier, Black Knights Fighter Squadron, Far East Western Pacific from 1958-1964.
That Navy experience put Sam in a wonderful position in Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy) in 1964 to be part of all of NASA’s Apollo missions that worked with North American Aviation (rocket builders). He was a senior electronics technician. As a spacecraft observer during the tests, he knew every switch and operation to get the job done as he was very familiar with the astronauts’ controls. He was part of an SCO (Spacecraft Operations) team that carried out simulation missions in the module. When the space program came to an end, Sam looked for new ventures, including in Lockheed, California. However, none was as exciting as participating in NASA’s Apollo missions. He loved EVERYTHING space, the moon and rockets.
After living in many locations in the US and England, the family eventually moved to Teutopolis and then to Effingham, where Sam worked and then retired from CIPS, now known as Ameren. Samuel enjoyed collecting Navy / NASA memorabilia and watching many movies about space. He loved going to the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds Air Shows and seeing when they got anywhere near Effingham. We love you Papa / Sam! You are really and really missed!
Samuel leaves his wife Julie Carr Thrasher from Effingham; Children, Theresa Thrasher Elmore (Marcus Nehl) from Denver, CO, Robert Thrasher (Claudia Wagner) from Sierra Vista, AZ, John Thrasher (Ana Cristina) from Las Vegas, NV and Nicholas Thrasher from Effingham; Grandsons, Keitan Hendry, Brayde Elmore, Christopher Thrasher and Patrick Thrasher; and siblings, Paul (Marita) Thrasher, Allen (Becky) Bell, Rita Colón, Geneva Riordan, Phillip Bell (Debbie) and Pat Bell (Pennie).
His parents preceded him in death; Brother, Michael Thrasher; and sister Charlotte Broga (Dwight).
