Samuel E. Gill | News, sports, jobs


Samuel E. “Sonny” Gill, 73, Hollidaysburg, died on Saturday morning at The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg after a brief illness.

He was born in Altoona to the late Samuel E. and Ruth A. (Hite) Gill. On May 25, 1968, he married Gail Frye, who survived, in the Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren.

In addition, three children survive: Brian (Erika) from Fort Collins, Colorado, Stephanie Spence from Pittsburgh and Anne Marie Gill-Re (Tim) from Mechanicsburg; a sister, G. Ruth Tierney of Hollidaysburg; and four grandchildren: Corey Spence, Gabrielle Spence, Victoria Re, and Harrison Re.

Sam preceded in death a brother, George Gill Sr.; and a sister, Mary Mueller.

He graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1966 and attended the Altoona School of Commerce. He retired as sales manager for the Ströhmann bakery and then as a van driver for Blair Senior Services. He was a member of the Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren, the Heidelberg Country Club and the Cesare Batiste Fraternal Society. He bowled at the Holiday Bowl Thursday night. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a fan of Penn State and Steelers. He enjoyed the Curve Baseball and Pirates Spring Practice.

Friends will be welcomed on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Plank, Stitt, & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral service on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren, Acting Pastor Linda Banaszak.

The family asks that masks be worn when visiting and at the funeral service.

The funeral will take place at Blair Memorial Park in Bellwood.

The family is asking for donations to remember Sam at Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren.
