Queen Elizabeth II’s final funeral: The coffin begins its final journey through Windsor

Mourners have descended on London from across the UK and around the world hoping to see Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession and soak up the atmosphere on the streets of the capital.

Sarah and Harry, from Kingston-upon-Thames, headed to London on Monday to take their place behind the cordons along Cromwell Road, where the mood is one of quiet anticipation. The couple, who declined to give their full names, said they were “burned out” at missing out on seeing the Queen in state.

For Emily, a 24-year-old secondary school teacher who recently moved to England from Australia, the funeral procession is “the perfect opportunity” to mourn. She told her history students that they are “living in such an amazing moment.”

Foreign residents and visitors have come to join the crowd in the capital. Diaksha, 36, and Kamlesh Sukdheo, 35, from South Africa, made their way to Hyde Park instead of the conference for which they had come to London to see the funeral on the big screens.

“It is a historic event, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Diaksha said.

“The example she set for all of us on how to relate to family and the world is inspiring,” added Kamlesh.

The Queen’s death prompted the Johannesburg couple to reflect on the heritage of the British monarchy in their home country.

“She is also our monarch; She is legendary and has reigned for 70 years.”

Four Chinese students from the University of London, who did not give their names, have come to Hyde Park. “We just wanted to pay our respects and try to understand your country’s history,” one said.

Navishad Majothi, 56, has traveled from Manchester. He recalls watching King Charles as Prince of Wales at the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

“What was that moment,” he said.

He came to the UK with his family from Uganda at the age of six as a refugee. “We owe her a lot,” he said.
