Pools are preparing for Memorial Day weekend

Temperatures are rising and kids are nearing the end of the school year, meaning communities are making plans to open their pools for the summer.

In Jacksonville, Nichols Park Pool opens as usual on May 28th for the first day of the season.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe summer this year,” said Jacksonville Parks Site Manager Adam Fletcher.

Pool operations should return to normal after two summers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

Pool hours are subject to change based on lifeguard availability, he said. A completion date has not yet been set, although the number of lifeguards could also affect that, particularly if school first resumes in the fall, he said.

Some minor work was done at the pool during the off-season, although a major project will follow after the end of this season, Fletcher said.

“We haven’t been able to do much this offseason because we’re waiting for a grant from the state to remodel the pool,” he said.

The project will include changes to the pool structure, equipment and deck.

The shallow end of the pool will be remodeled to have a no depth entry to make it more accessible and some splash features will be installed.

“It’s going to be kinder to kids of all ages,” Fletcher said.

Construction will begin as soon as possible after the funding has been received, he said.

“We may have to close when school starts in August, although maybe that’s a good thing if we can start earlier,” he said.

The pool is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is $3 for children under 12 and seniors and $4 for adults. Season passes are also available.

The Winchester Public Pool is expected to open on May 28th.

Jill Cox, chair of the pool board, said some repairs are underway at the pool, although they hope they will be ready in time for the opening.

“Our hope is always to open by Memorial weekend,” said Cox.

The pool’s liner is being repaired after a bubble has formed, and work is also being done on the slide and a diving board.

The pool is open daily from 11:30am to 6:00pm. Admission is $5 for those 5 years and older and $3 for seniors. Season passes and punch cards are also available.

Other pool openings:

Bartstown — The Sudbrink Water Park opens at noon on May 28. The pool is open daily from 12pm to 5:30pm. Admission is $5 for children ages 4 and up. Season passes and other options are available.

South Jacksonville Splash Pad – The South Jacksonville Splash Pad at Godfrey Park opens May 27. The pad will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The splash guard is free.
