Patricia Ann Wiley died peacefully at the age of 93 on June 3, 2022 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
Pat was a “May Day” baby, born May 1, 1929 in Urbana, Illinois. She was the youngest of Edwin and Rose (Little) Pilchard’s five children.
Pat attended Urbana High, University of Illinois and received her Registered Nurse degree specializing in Emergency Care from the Wesley Memorial School of Nurse in Chicago. In Chicago she met her future husband Philip K. Wiley. They married in 1952.
After Phil’s residency, they moved to Traverse City, where they raised a family of four boys on Seventh Street.
Pat chose a career that involved making the house, making friends, and volunteering.
She loved decor, entertainment, travel, crafts, Silver Lake, skiing and golf (her line-drive roller hole-in-one at TCG&CC was witnessed by three others).
Pat and Phil shared their hobbies, interests and boys with several longtime friends and their families. Phil left us on January 31, 2001.
Pat was a lifelong Methodist and actively attended Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. She has served on several church boards and has been active in the fellowship meal program, prayer chain and parish committee.
She supported every charity for a good cause and treasured her decades of service in the PEO sorority. Pat helped organize the fundraiser for Traverse City’s First Symphony Home Tour and opened her Seventh Street home to the community. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Silver Lake Association, past President of the Munson Medical Auxiliary, and has held state-level paramedic positions. She has been a volunteer nurse for the American Cancer Society, the Tri-County Health Department, and the Red Cross Blood Mobile. She also served in hospice and bereavement. Pat also raised funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, helped with the early Vasa races, and volunteered her boys to help clean up the bottom of the Boardman River under the Union Street Bridge.
Appropriately renamed by her two-year-old first granddaughter in 1989, Pat has been known as “Bama” ever since.
Bama is survived by her four sons; seven giants; and five great-grandchildren; son Thomas of Missouri; son Timothy (Kathie) of Traverse City; son Paul (Lisa) of Traverse City with their daughters and families Lydia (Eamon) and boys Winston and Archie Smith of Traverse City; Laura (Wilson) and daughter Wiley Hart Duty of Tacoma, Washington; Lillian (Ben) and boys Warren and Leo Swan from Traverse City; and Claire Wiley (Ryan Hughes) from Ann Arbor; and son, Philip (Michelle), children, Philip, Nicole and Anna, all from Durango, Colorado.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City.
In lieu of flowers, Bama would appreciate a donation to the Hickory Hills development, 233 N. Madison Street, Traverse City, MI 49684 or online at preventhickory.com
