Obituary for Shirley J. Greenig – The Intelligencer

Shirley J. Greenig, a longtime resident of Warminster, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Abington Jefferson Health Hospital. She was 89 years old. Born in Abington, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Gertrude (née Hudders) Benson. She was the beloved wife of the late George G. Greenig, who passed away on May 25, 2020.

Shirley was the loving mother of Michele (Scott) Reinert and George B. Greenig. Shirley will also be greatly missed by her adoring grandchildren; Alexandra Renee and Matthew George Reinert.

Shirley was best known to all as a caretaker. She supported her husband George while he was at sea (as a merchant marine) by always loving her children, home and family and dearest friends. Her selfless and generous heart was evident in everything she did. From a young age, she demonstrated a strong work ethic by helping out in the grocery store her mother and stepfather owned in Willow Grove. After graduating from high school, she became the company secretary of a stocking union in Philadelphia. She met the love of her life on a double date with her best friend, and the rest was history. Over the course of their 65 years together, she spent many vacations with George on the beach with her children and grandchildren, took her grandchildren shopping at local malls, and played with her late dog Snoopy, her late grandson Max, and eventually another grandson who made it Shirley had smiles again after George died, Frankie.

There is no better example of a marriage that has remained strong “in sickness or in health” than that of Shirley and George. When George was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2011, she was his primary caregiver, assisting him with countless treatments and appointments over a seven-year period. When Shirley was diagnosed with a rare disease of the pancreas, she was looked after by George. They really were a “Love Story”, “Two Peas in a Pod”, the other half of the other. They are now together forever.

Services for Shirley will be held at the Decker-Givnish Life Celebration Home on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until her memorial service at 11:00 a.m.

Burial Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
