Jim Nicholas, 83, went unto the Lord on June 23, 2022 after a year and a half of courageous struggle. He was born in Akron on October 8, 1938 to the late William and Elizabeth Nicholas and lived there all his life. Jim graduated from East High School in 1956 and retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in 1996 after building tires and air springs and eventually working in the Banbury area.
After retirement, Jim loved to travel with his wife Catherine on many adventures around the country and abroad through the AAA Akron Travel Club. When Jim was not traveling he could be found at the golf course from March to the end of October as he was an avid golfer. Jim planned everything related to his golf plan over the summer. When he wasn’t playing golf, he was tending his lawn. Jim was known in the neighborhood for his “award winning” lawn with no weeds and perfectly cut grass. And in the evenings he would sit outside on the porch of the house and read a book while becoming addicted to James Patterson novels.
Jim showed his family what it means to work hard and reap the rewards of your labour. He showed his kids that you never call someone to do what you could do yourself. He told his kids that when they could do the work around the house, when they were done, they could sit back and enjoy the results when they finished. He was right.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his in-laws, John and Lillian Riley. Jim is survived by his loving wife Catherine, who was 61; son, James, Jr. (Roberta); daughter, Debra (Steven) Romanowski; grandchildren, Cassandra and Justin (Nora) Nicholas and Paige Romanowski; sisters, Pauline Tinker and Marlene (Cliff) Baker; brothers, Jack (Linda) and Nick (Lynda) Nicholas; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319, conducted by Rev. Sue Roseman.
