ST. GEORGE – Major (US Army retired) Mark A. Bartholomew was born on March 19, 1940 in Ware, Massachusetts to Colonel Lisle Bartholomew and Vera Mensch Bartholomew. He was diagnosed with aggressive cancer on Monday September 19 and died peacefully on September 23, 2022 at the age of 82 surrounded by his family.
Mark graduated from (West) Anchorage High School and earned his BS in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, where he was an active member of the UAF National Rifle Team and the Alpine and Nordic Ski Teams.
After college, he married his first wife, Carole (Rollison) Warner, and raised two daughters together in their 36-year union. Mark served in the US Army for more than 20 years. After “retirement,” he worked in real estate, commercial fishing, and as a boat captain with Kenai Fjords Tours in Seward, Alaska.
In 1999, he remarried his high school sweetheart, Betsy (Rockwell) Bartholomew. The couple spent 20 happy years together, fishing and traveling between Maine and Alaska. Mark has been very active in his community and always willing to help friends and neighbors.
Predeceased by his wife Betsy, Mark is survived by his sister Sue B. Wade of St. Albans, Vermont; his former wife, Carole Warner, of Tavares, Florida; his two daughters and Betsy’s two sons: Laura Young, her husband Ty, and their children Marin (Young) Wilson and Christian Young (Maryland and Texas), Rebecca Marcoux, her husband Steven and their sons Joshua and Ryan of Foxborough, Massachusetts , John Bidwell, his wife Kris Holloway, and their sons Aidan and Liam of Northampton, Massachusetts, and Jim Bidwell, his wife Ruth, and their daughters Emma and Rachel of Penacook, New Hampshire.
The family is grateful for the support of numerous friends and community members who have cared for Mark, particularly Hale Miller and Joan Small; sister-in-law Merle Rockwell and her husband Ed Modell; Betsy’s cousin Chris Cook and his wife Annika and their son Alexander; Joe and Rachel Baldwin; and Jack Scoby.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on October 29, 2022 at Broad Cove Community Church in Cushing, Maine. Rev. Anne Roundy will officiate.
The family suggests making memorial donations on Mark’s behalf to Broad Cove Community Church (PO Box 189, Friendship, ME 04547-0189), Marshall Point Light (marshallpoint.org), or the Alaska SeaLife Center (alaskasealife.org).
