A man was injured in a shooting near the memorial for rapper Young Dolph on Thursday, just the day after the artist was gunned down in a well-known bakery in Tennessee.
the Memphis Police Department said the man was shot dead in the 2600 block of Airways Boulevard and listed as “uncritical”.
The violence unfolded as mourners gathered Thursday around Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, the place where the 36-year-old rapper, whose name was Adolph Thornton Jr., was killed on Wednesday. The store is located at Block 2300 on Airways Boulevard.
Three people were arrested in connection with Thursday’s shooting. While two of them were instantly arrested, the third person was arrested after brief persecution, Memphis police said. Their names were not published.
It is not clear whether the two shoots are related. Both are still under investigation.
There have been no arrests after the rapper’s death.
Young Dolph, who was in Memphis for his annual Thanksgiving sweepstakes, was on his way to handing out turkeys when he stopped at the bakery, his attorney Scott Hall said.
Police were called to the bakery, located southeast of downtown Memphis at 12:24 p.m. Wednesday, Chief CJ Davis said in a statement Wednesday.
“The shooting is another example of the pointless gun violence we experience locally and nationwide,” she said. “Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and everyone who has been affected by this horrific act of violence.”
She said a motive was unclear and investigators were collecting details from witnesses in order to identify the shooter (s).
On Thursday, police shared photos of two people they are looking for in connection with the shootings on Wednesday. They were recorded by surveillance cameras.
Police said the surveillance footage shows the couple exiting a white two-door Mercedes Benz armed with guns. They approach the rapper in the store and shoot him several times before escaping from the crime scene. The investigation continues.
Also on Thursday, Young Dolph’s longtime partner Mia Jaye spoke for the first time.
Jaye, who is also the mother of his two children, spoke about his death on a number of Instagram stories.
In a video showing Young Dolph exercising with her daughter, Jaye wrote, “The question is … how do I tell my babies that Daddy never comes home?”
“God give me strength,” she wrote in another post. “Adolph, I love you with all my heart.”
Jaye thanked everyone for their prayers and messages of support.
“I may not see them all, but if my eyes are not full of tears, I’ll catch a few,” she added in another post. “Even so, all the real positive vibes, energy, and prayers are welcome … because God knows I need them.”
The Commercial Appeal reported that Young Dolph was the victim of two more shootings.
In February 2017, he was in a vehicle in Charlotte, North Carolina when a person fired more than 100 rounds at the heavily armored SUV he was in and saved his life.
Later that year, Young Dolph was critically injured when he was shot multiple times outside a hotel in the Hollywood area of ââLos Angeles. He made a full recovery, the newspaper reported.
Variety reported that he was the cousin of Chicago rapper Juice Wrld, who died of a drug overdose at Midway International Airport in 2019.
The Memphis Police Department say clues can be given to Homicide at 901-636-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH. Police say there is a cash bonus for clues leading to the identification and arrest of suspects.
