L&A Veterans Council solicits names for memorial stone in park

LOVE SUN SPOTS: Anyone in Sun Spots Land who would like their veteran’s name on a memorial stone at Veterans Memorial Park at Main Street and Lincoln Street in Lewiston must submit their information by September 15. The names will be revealed during a Veterans Day program.

Type Veterans Memorial Park in the search bar on the right and the information will appear, or call or email Jerry Dewitt at 576-0376 [email protected]. He monitors the names on the memorial stones.

You may also contact L&A Veterans Council Treasurer Brandon Pelletier at 713-5589, who will process applications and checks.

Your veteran must be currently on duty, retired, or deceased and honorably discharged from any branch of the US military, including the Reserve or National Guard, Merchant Marine, or other branch of the military. A copy of DD214, 215, 217-MC, WD AGO 53-55 or photograph in uniform must accompany the application. The cost of engraving is 35 euros

LOVE SUN SPOTS: I received SMS and voice messages on my iPhone, allegedly from Amazon, saying my account was frozen and I need to get in touch with them. Does anyone else get these calls? — Linda, no city

REPLY: These are phishing messages and yes I have received some. Don’t react to it. block them If you do have an Amazon account, you can go to your account online to see if there is any evidence of suspicious activity, and if so, change your password. Contact customer service by phone or online chat. The instructions are right there on the website. You may have to leave a message but they will call you back.

DEAR SUNSPOT: Please send in the Carrot Bundt Cake recipe you posted last spring. — Period, no city

REPLY: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift 2 cups flour with 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon allspice, 1/4 teaspoon cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups sugar and 1 1/4 cups oil until well combined. Add 4 eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Add dry ingredients and beat for 2 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and 1 teaspoon flour. Stir walnuts, 1 1/2 cups grated carrots, and 1 (8.25 ounce) can mashed pineapple into batter. Spoon batter into a greased and floured 9-inch bundt pan.

Bake 1 hour or until cake testing is complete. Leave to cool in the pan on the wire rack for 10 minutes. Turn cake over and remove from pan. Leave to cool on the wire rack and drizzle with icing sugar or dust with icing sugar. This recipe makes 12 servings.
