Joseph C Smithers | obituaries

Joseph C. Smithers, age 73, of Ogdensburg, died Wednesday (January 19, 2022) at the University of Vermont Hospital in Burlington. A memorial service will be held in the spring at a time to be determined.

Survived are his children Timothy Smithers from Canandaigua, Sara Pray & her husband Roger from Oneonta & Kathleen Terrill & her husband Craig from Jurupa Valley, CA; grandsons Zachary Moshey and his wife Stevie of Missoula, MT, Odin Terrill of California, Austin Smithers and his girlfriend Courtney Young of Greenville, SC and Emma Smithers of Canandaigua; a brother Ronald Brooks and his wife Gail of Ronan, MT; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joe was born on January 4, 1949 in Ogdensburg to the late Robert & Eleanor (Chrysler) Smithers. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1967 and continued his education at Sullivan County Community College.

During his career, Joe worked on farms, Acme Markets, Sullivan County Community College as a lifeguard, restaurants and hotels in Sullivan County, and became a therapy assistant at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in 1970 until his retirement in 1970.

He was a lifetime member of the NYS Marine Corp League, the St. Lawrence County & National Trappers Association, a lifetime member of the Eagle Scout Association, a lifetime member of the NRA and a 32nd degree Scottish Mason. Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and spending time with his friends and family.
