Funeral, procession will honor Wayne Deputy Sgt. Matthew Fishman ::

– A memorial service on Tuesday will honor a Wayne County congressman who was shot dead on duty.

On Friday, a procession carried the body of ECU Medical’s Wayne County Sgt. Matthew Fishman to a funeral home in Dudley. Tuesday’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. at the University of Mount Olive’s Kornegay Arena.

The service is not publicly available, but members of the community can watch a live stream on YouTube.

Fishman, 38, was married and the father of two children, ages 10 and 14.

He was the son of a pastor and dreamed of becoming a police officer as a child, according to his online obituary. It said: “Matthew loves his family – spending time with them has always been a top priority for the beach, day trips in eastern North Carolina or even the world’s best kickball championships.

Matthew became “Mr. Fixit” around their home working projects and making things that suit their needs and desires. He learned woodworking and built shelves, cabinets and desks for the home. No project was too easy or too difficult for him. If his family needed it, he would figure out how to do it and do it.”

Fishman died on Tuesday August 2nd.

He and two other MPs were shot dead the day before while trying to fulfill an involuntary commitment order for Jourdan Hamilton. Hamilton died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the nine-hour standoff.
