Funeral of 12-year-old Rochester, who was killed in a fire on Memorial Day

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – A memorial service was held on Saturday to remember the 12-year-old boy who died in the house fire on Memorial Day on Haager Strasse.

Christopher Higgins-Maldonado was one of his seven family members trapped in his home when a fire broke out around 10 a.m. His siblings and parents could be treated for burns and wounds, unfortunately Christopher succumbed to his injuries after a hospital stay on the same day.

Christopher’s funeral was open to the public and took place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Joseph Avenue.

After Christopher’s death and the loss of his family’s house, the community raised donations through several clothing campaigns, donation requests and a GoFundMe page.

Christopher’s family hadn’t counted on the support of the surrounding communities.

“We’ve got so much love and support from family, friends, coworkers and even strangers in the US and even outside the US to try to help him, it’s an overwhelming but beautiful feeling,” said Christopher’s uncle James Higgins said. “But we certainly appreciate everything that everyone has done for us and is still doing for us.”

The cause of the fire is not known.
