A memorial service will be held Tuesday for longtime Bishop of San Diego Robert Brom, who died last Monday at the age of 83.

The service for Brom, who was Bishop of San Diego from 1990 until his retirement in 2013, was held after a procession of bishops and clergy at the Church of Saint Thérèse of Carmel in Del Mar Heights.

“Bishop Brom had been a pastor, teacher, and serving leader of the Catholic community in San Diego and the Imperial counties for 23 years,” Bishop McElroy said at the time of Brom’s death. “He oversaw the building of many beautiful churches in our diocese and two great high school campuses.”

Brom came to San Diego after serving as bishop of Duluth, Minnesota, just hours from his ordained place in Winona, Minnesota, and where he was born in 1938 in Arcadia, Wisc.

According to McElroy, one of Brom’s retirement years was spent working with the prison chaplaincy, which he began as bishop of the local diocese.
