Eastern Kentucky HS Band invited to the 2022 National Memorial Day Parade

LONDON, Kentucky (WYMT) – A high school band from eastern Kentucky has been invited to represent the Commonwealth at the 2022 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC

“It’s huge, it’s been several years since Kentucky had a representative, and to my knowledge we’ve never had this band at a major event like this,” Billy Carpenter, band director at North Laurel High School, said.

North Laurel High School was the only Kentucky band invited, and now the band is trying to raise money to participate in the parade.

“Our next big fundraiser is our Valentines Dinner on February 12 at the London Community Center, it’s $20 a ticket, the jazz band is playing, we’re serving pork tenderloin dinners, there’s a raffle and all sorts of other extra things happening,” Carpenter said .

Band officials also seek donations and sponsorships from corporations across the state.

“We’re only ever looking for donations from Kentucky corporations, since we’re the only band representing the state, we’re hoping we can find some of the bigger corporations in Kentucky, some of the proud corporations in Kentucky that might want to sponsor us.” ‘ Carpenter added.

From January through May, the band members take time out from their busy schedules to work on new events – all in an effort to get to DC

“We have a lot of music ready with the jazz band. We could come and play for anyone as long as we could work it out with the school in advance,” Carpenter said.

The goal is to raise $18,000 for the trip.
