Disney’s The Little Mermaid Remake includes four new Alan Menken songs

While Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is still quite a long way off after being postponed to Memorial Day 2023, leading actress Halle Bailey has assured fans that the wait will be worth it. In the meantime, we’ve now had nearly two years of little teasing, pictures, and other reminders that the movie is still to come, and songwriter Alan Menken has started this off by revealing that the new version of the film is no less than. will contain four new songs. The original animated classic featured a small number of iconic songs, including Part of your world, Under the sea, Kiss the girl, Poor unhappy souls and a number of reprises, so the additional melodies are quite an improvement over many other recent remakes, which usually include a new track in addition to the long-running songs.

Speaking of Disney’s For scores Podcast, Alan Menken discussed his work on the original Little Mermaid with the late Howard Ashman and his new collaboration with Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda on the new film. “At first, Lin-Manuel Miranda struggled making Alan Menken style songs and felt walking in Howard Ashman’s shoes was a daunting prospect. Then we wrote some songs that were in Lin’s wheelhouse and for me, Lin -Manuel Miranda’s shoes were a scary prospect, but we had a great time, “explained Menken.

He continued, “Howard had a very strong feeling about making sure that we are always moving the story forward and that we are always stylistically rooted in one world. Howard would really raise the animators, sit down and talk to them about how songs should advance a story, heard from Lin-Manuel Miranda when he was a little kid because my niece went to Hunter School and she was a classmate of Lin was … I would hear about it [him] from my sister Faye who said, ‘That boy, Lin, he loves The little mermaid so much. Could you sign this poster? I remember signing a poster for Lin that said, “To Lin, please stop kissing Jenny’s feet. Alan Menken. ‘”

Menken previously worked on Disney’s other remakes of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdinto revise some of the existing classics and add a new big number to both in the form of always and Speechless or with The little mermaid Now it is confirmed that the song content will be doubled and there will clearly be future classics among them and clearly work has been done to carry over the style of the movie’s original tracks to the new material. As with many of the new versions of the Disney animated back catalog, the runtime has to be extended from the usual 65-80 minute runtime of the originals, and the Little Mermaid will clearly make up for some of that expansion in musical numbers as well as story details.

The Disney film features an all-star cast alongside Bailey’s Ariel, including Javier Bardem as King Trition, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder and Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle the Seagull, while Jonah Hauer-King will play Prince Eric. The little mermaid is currently scheduled to swim ashore on May 26, 2023. This message is courtesy of Variety.
