Delores J. VanDyke passed away peacefully on Friday, November 26th, 2021 at Light Ways Hospice, surrounded by the love of her family, at the age of 85. Delores was born on December 14, 1935 to the late Lawrence VanDyke and Carrie (nee Bennett) Hurley and stepfather Paul Hurley. Born in Pekin, IL, she attended Pekin High School and the Braille & Sight Savings School in East Peoria. She later moved to Joliet in 1952.
Delores was a woman of faith who loved the Lord. She was an active member of Grace Bible Church in Shorewood, where she ran the kindergarten and served as attendance secretary for several years. Being a caretaker was second nature to her, childcare was a big part of her life. Having no biological children of her own, Delores mothered over 200 children throughout her career in childcare and was the primary caregiver for her mother in her later years. When she wasn’t caring about others, she was an avid reader, self-educated, and immensely knowledgeable. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching every game.
Delores leaves her sister Joyce Carrier, brother-in-law, Joseph Jimenez, Sr.; together with numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Her dear friend Cindy Faulkner also survived.
Her parents precede her; Stepfather Paul Hurley; Sister Sharon Jimenez and a little brother.
Delores J. VanDyke’s visit will be at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road (in Essington Road) on Saturday, December 4, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to the 11:00 a.m. funeral.), Joliet, IL. The burial takes place in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Instead of flowers, monuments in their name would be desirable for Light Ways Hospice, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, IL 60431.
