Embassy of Azerbaijan celebrates Memorial Day in honor of war martyrs

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Embassy of Azerbaijan observed “Remembrance Day” here Tuesday to honor the martyrs of the Patriotic War who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in 2020.

At the memorial day ceremony, Ambassador of Azerbaijan Khazar Farhadov said that this “memorial day” is a sign of deep respect for Azerbaijani soldiers and officers, all martyrs who fought heroically in the Patriotic War waved the Azerbaijani flag liberated countries and sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

He said Armenia illegally occupied Azerbaijan’s lands for almost 30 years. During these years, Armenia has repeatedly committed provocations against Azerbaijan.

He said that on September 27, 2020, two years ago, a counter-offensive was launched in response to Armenia’s another large-scale military attack on Azerbaijani army positions and civilian settlements. The counter-offensive later became known as Operation Iron Fist and led to the Patriotic War.

At the end of the 44-day Patriotic War, Khazar, led by the Commander-in-Chief of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, President Ilham Aliyev, said, “Our army liberated the territories of Azerbaijan from the Armenian occupation, and Armenia was forced to sign an instrument of surrender, thereby marking the historic victory of Azerbaijan recognize.”

The Ambassador said: “I must mention that since the first day of the former Karabakh conflict, as well as morally and politically supported Azerbaijan’s just position during the patriotic war in 2020, fraternal Pakistan and the government and the Azerbaijani people have greatly appreciated it. “

Explaining the details of the war, he said the Patriotic War put an end to Armenia’s nearly 30-year policy of aggression. Azerbaijan secured its territorial integrity and the basic rights of almost a million displaced Azerbaijanis were restored. Azerbaijan alone ensured the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions of 1993.

Immediately after the liberation, Azerbaijan started massive reconstruction and restoration works in the liberated areas. In 2021 and 2022, the Azerbaijani government allocated nearly US$3 billion for the large-scale reconstruction and restoration activities in the liberated countries.

“I would like to inform you that Fuzuli International Airport, which was built in just 8 months, is now operational. Two other international airports, namely Zangilan and Lachin, are under construction and will also be operational very soon,” he added.

In addition, the first Azerbaijani IDPs have already returned to the rebuilt “smart village” village of Aghali in the liberated region of Zangilan.

Shusha, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, has already become a venue for international events. The group “Pakistan Colors” performed the “Bhangra” dance at the 5th International Folklore Festival “Kharibulbul” held in Shusha in May 2022.

The ambassador stated that Azerbaijan offered peace to Armenia immediately after the war. However, Armenia was not interested in peace. The Azerbaijani side proposes demarcation and demarcation, but Armenia delays it. “We have proposed five principles for signing a peace treaty with Armenia. In words, they accepted them, but we don’t see it in practice. All this shows once again that Armenia is not interested in peace,” he added.

In addition, Armenia has repeatedly committed military provocations against Azerbaijan in recent months. More than 1,400 new land mines were laid in Lachin District alone, and these mines were laid after the war in 2021. This is a flagrant act of terrorism against Azerbaijan. Since the end of the war, more than 240 Azerbaijani citizens have been killed or seriously injured by landmine explosions.

On September 13, Armenian forces again carried out large-scale provocations in the direction of Dashkasan, Kalbayar and Lachin on the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border. The sabotage groups of the Armenian Armed Forces used the mountainous terrain of the region and the existing ravines to mine the areas and supply roads between the positions of the Azerbaijani army units in different directions. But of course the glorious Azerbaijani army reacted and put the enemy back in position, the ambassador concluded.
